If you have been following my posts, you know I am a playwright in the making. As of now I have not had my works published, or performed in front of a paying audience. Thus the “in the making”.
That said I’ve written three plays:
Dinners with Augie
Justice and Injustice
The Day My Father Met the Lord
Of those three, the first one (“Augie”) has been through a reading, and the second one is scheduled for a reading later this year. I’ll talk about the “Augie” reading in another post, and update you on the “Justice” reading as we get closer to the event. And I’ll get some synopsis’s posted soon, and some commentary about each play. I will repeat here (and often elsewhere) the the process of getting a play through a reading is an important first step. Plus the Augie reading was a huge amount of fun!
In the meantime I want to talk about my next steps, which (besides getting “Augie” in final draft, etc.) is to get my plays produced and published.
First, my understanding is that it wouldn’t be a good idea to publish the plays myself on this blog. No one has actually said this, but I notice that other professionals (Jon Dorf) haven’t. In fact Mr. Dorf makes a point of saying his plays are subject to copyright laws, intellectual property rights laws, and are subject to royalties. From what I gather so far, people who publish plays (i.e. publishers) don’t want other people (including the author) posting the content to websites.
But the above said, I’m going to make one exception. The third play, “The Day My Father Met the Lord” is a 10 minute play, no setting to speak of so it’s really simple production, and I was going to make it available to non-profit groups anyway. Of course anyone who charges admission will have to pay royalties. And I might point out my plays are registered with the US Copyright Office . So stay tuned and I’ll have the play available in another blog post.
Secondly, I’ll be working on other ideas as time allows. I need to finish up “Augie”, and see if I can get it produced.
And I want to keep exploring the art of playwriting, and see where it takes me.
