{"id":1442,"date":"2012-05-04T14:19:56","date_gmt":"2012-05-04T21:19:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/libernetics.com\/?p=1442"},"modified":"2012-05-04T14:23:13","modified_gmt":"2012-05-04T21:23:13","slug":"crossfit-ego-vs-performance-revisited","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libernetics.com\/?p=1442","title":{"rendered":"Crossfit: ego vs. performance revisited"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The other day we were practicing power snatches.<\/p>\n<p><object style=\"height: 390px; width: 640px;\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/7h4r8tWGAKM?version=3&amp;feature=player_detailpage\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><embed style=\"height: 390px; width: 640px;\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/7h4r8tWGAKM?version=3&amp;feature=player_detailpage\" allowFullScreen=\"true\" allowScriptAccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Which I&#8217;m not all that good at. \u00a0I thought I understood the move because it was part of the Crossfit Open WODs. \u00a0But I could hardly mange it during a recent WOD (&#8220;Hope&#8221;.) \u00a0During the drill I noticed a young woman (Cori P.) off to my right doing hang power cleans. \u00a0Cori is a great\u00a0athlete; she also happens to be a smaller\u00a0athlete.\u00a0My attention was divided (not a good thing) and at one point I noticed she was doing 135#.\u00a0HPC are one of things I&#8217;m working on (it&#8217;s part of the Level I test) and I haven&#8217;t mastered the movement. \u00a0\u00a0So I made a mental note to ask her about what she was doing.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway I struggled through the snatches, switching back and forth between 75# hang-power snatches, power snatches, trying to get a\u00a0rhythm\u00a0going. \u00a0I made some progress. \u00a0But not much. \u00a0 Mostly I was getting the bar up to high shoulder level and pressing it up.<\/p>\n<p>The next day I went in we did a 20 minute amrap of 200m runs and 250 rows with a partner. \u00a0Pam and I did 8 3\/4 rounds, which is good (on par with the other teams.) A great workout, and I was satisfied with the results.<\/p>\n<p>After the WOD I noticed Cori P. coming in, so I talked to her and she confirmed that it was 135#. \u00a0I asked her how much she weighed &#8212; 115 lbs. \u00a0I admit I have mixed feelings about seeing a 115# women doing 135# hang power cleans while I&#8217;m\u00a0struggling\u00a0with 95#. \u00a0I&#8217;m happy to see that level of skill and strength. \u00a0It&#8217;s an\u00a0inspiration. \u00a0But\u00a0I outweigh Cori by 30 lbs and I can&#8217;t get 135# past my waist.<\/p>\n<p>A few minutes later I was talking to another very good\u00a0athlete, a guy known as &#8220;Big&#8221; Rob (he is actually really big, like <a title=\"Mr. Incredible\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/media\/rm4218260480\/ch0003833\" target=\"_blank\">Mr. Incredible<\/a>) and I mentioned being somewhat frustrated with not being able to perform better. \u00a0As it so happens Big Rob was helping <a title=\"Brook Bergeson\" href=\"http:\/\/www.crossfittrain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brooke<\/a>\u00a0run the CFES On-Ramp class on my first day at crossfit. \u00a0His reply to my comment about feeling bad about my current\u00a0performance\u00a0was that my real comparison should be where I started from. \u00a0He pointed out that on my first day my performance was so bad he was\u00a0surprised\u00a0I stuck it out. \u00a0\u00a0He&#8217;s right about how bad it was, that&#8217;s for sure. \u00a0It was hilariously bad; I could tell. \u00a0I came in at 16 or so. Of course 1 month later I did the same WOD in 8 minutes. \u00a0And the progress has continued.<\/p>\n<p>I know Rob is right about the\u00a0comparison. \u00a0 But still, the gap is way too large. At least that&#8217;s how it feels. \u00a0Is that ego? Probably.<\/p>\n<p>Today I did 7 rounds of 10m-20m-30m-40m\u00a0suicide\u00a0runs, 8 burpees and 12 box jumps (20 inch box.)
