{"id":1395,"date":"2012-04-28T16:10:02","date_gmt":"2012-04-28T23:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/libernetics.com\/?p=1395"},"modified":"2012-04-28T16:10:02","modified_gmt":"2012-04-28T23:10:02","slug":"crossfit-warriors-theater-discipline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libernetics.com\/?p=1395","title":{"rendered":"Crossfit: warriors, theater, discipline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Crossfit demands commitment. \u00a0My goal is to work out four days a week. \u00a0For me that&#8217;s a tough schedule. \u00a0I&#8217;m typically worn out after the second day, and I&#8217;m a bit sore the rest of the week. \u00a0So the last day is usually a tough one. \u00a0Developing the discipline to do that schedule required patience.<\/p>\n<p>My goal used to be lift as much weights, Rx the WOD, whatever. \u00a0Now my goal is to get 100% commitment each time I&#8217;m there.<\/p>\n<p>Today we did the usual warm up (which\u00a0included\u00a030 pullups, 30 squats and 30 ring dips) and then 2x 800 meter run, 30 situps, 800m run, 30 superman rocks. \u00a0So: two miles, 60 situps, 60 superman rocks (a &#8220;superman rock&#8221; is like a reverse hollow rock.) \u00a0My total time was 22:12. \u00a0I&#8217;m guessing I ran an 8 minute mile in there, but no better than that. \u00a0I think I got about 98% of the workout. \u00a0I could have run a bit faster; but not much.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings me around to another discussion about commitment and discipline in a different sport: theater. \u00a0 I write plays (<a title=\"Dinners With Augie\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dinnerswithaugie.com\" target=\"_blank\">and I&#8217;ve produced one of them<\/a>) and I attend plays on a regular basis. \u00a0<a title=\"Libernetics theater reviews\" href=\"https:\/\/libernetics.com\/?cat=3\" target=\"_blank\">I&#8217;ve reviewed a few of them<\/a>.\u00a0I&#8217;ve gotten to know quite a few actors. \u00a0I&#8217;ve come to believe theater is as much a sport as an art. \u00a0Theater take a huge commitment. \u00a0It requires tremendous discipline to create the kind of in-the-moment pretense that a play is.<\/p>\n<p>I once wrote that the\u00a0<a title=\"The Playwright As Warrior\" href=\"https:\/\/libernetics.com\/?p=420\" target=\"_blank\">playwright\u00a0is a warrior<\/a>, but it&#8217;s true of actors as well. \u00a0So theater is sport. \u00a0Not a blood-sport, but it does put demands on the mind, the nervous system; our bodies really don&#8217;t know the difference between emotional fear and\u00a0physical\u00a0fear. \u00a0Both kinds trigger the flight or fight\u00a0responses.<\/p>\n<p>To be\u00a0successful\u00a0at crossfit, or theater, or anything that requires the extension of one&#8217;s abilities, requires 100% commitment. \u00a0Developing that kind of committed mind requires \u00a0determination.<\/p>\n<p>I know the &#8220;warrior&#8221; mind thing has become a common place metaphor. \u00a0There are\u00a0professionals, and sometime ordinary people, who place themselves in harms way and sometimes they pay a high price. \u00a0A play is a\u00a0pretense\u00a0reveals\u00a0something about our humanness in a setting where risks are carefully mitigated. \u00a0But at it&#8217;s best\u00a0theater respects the dangers of life and honors the efforts of living. \u00a0Theater offers an opportunity to reflect on who we are as individuals, communities, and nations. \u00a0Crossfit offers that same \u00a0opportunity. \u00a0But to get the most out of it, you have to commit 100%.<\/p>\n<p>Cheers.<br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\n google_ad_client = \"pub-0675667561792454\"; \/* Ad#1 Writers Block *\/ google_ad_slot = \"4888260728\"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250;\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\n\n\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To be successful at crossfit, or theater, or anything that requires the extension of one&#8217;s abilities, requires 100% commitment.
